Sacraments
Baptism
Parents who wish their child to be baptized should be registered members of St. Basil. Parents are asked to contact the Pastor to set up a meeting time for preparation which is typically a one hour session with him. Godparents must be Catholics who are fully initiated (celebrated sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation) and live their faith also through regular Mass attendance. If one of the godparents will be someone of another faith, they must be baptized and active in their faith and are identified as a Christian Witness. There is no designation as an honorary godparent. The Sacrament of Baptism is ordinarily celebrated on a Saturday afternoon. For Adult, Teen or older child baptism (over 7 years of age) please see Adult Baptism (RCIA). If you are an adult, teen or older child (over 7 years of age) already validly baptized in another Christian Faith and would like to continue your journey in Christ as a Catholic, for more information see the end of the Adult Baptism (RCIA) page. First Reconciliation The sacrament of First Reconciliation (Confession) is celebrated in the 2nd Grade. Children must be baptized. Children will take part in the parish’s sacramental preparation program for First Reconciliation. First Eucharist The sacrament of First Eucharist (First Communion) is celebrated in the 2nd Grade, followed by but not in proximity to First Reconciliation. Children will take part in the parish’s sacramental preparation program for First Eucharist. Confirmation Confirmation is celebrated in the 11th Grade. Candidates for the sacrament will attend the Confirmation Preparation sessions held in the Fall with the Sacrament celebrated either late October or early November. The sponsor chosen for Confirmation by the candidate must be fully initiated (celebrated Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation), in good standing with the Church, not be their parent, and is active in the Church. Marriage Any couple wishing to be married at St. Basil must notify the pastor at least six months prior to their intended date as required by Policy of the Diocese of Lafayette. An initial interview will be scheduled to begin the Marriage Preparation Process. If Catholic, the engaged person is to contact their Church of Baptism to request a recently dated copy (within six months) of their Certificate of Baptism. If the engaged person is not Catholic, some form of document of having been baptized is requested. At the initial interview as required by the Diocesan Marriage Preparation Policy the couple will be registered to take an online assessment called Prepare and Enrich. Also at the initial interview the couple will be shown how to register for one of the marriage preparation programs being offered. Their requested date will be entered on the calendar but the finalization of that date will not take place until after the marriage preparation process is completed. Several more meetings will be scheduled with the couple and planning of the wedding ceremony itself will take place at the final meeting. Anointing of the Sick Contact the Parish Office to arrange for a priest to anoint any Catholic in need of this sacrament of healing. Holy Orders Please contact the pastor if there is a desire to enter the seminary for the Diocese of Lafayette. He will meet with you and direct you to the Office of Vocations for the Diocese of Lafayette to begin the process of requesting to be a candidate. The earliest a person may enter the seminary is following their graduation from High School. |
